As parents, we take joy in watching our children grow and learn about the world around them. One of the most rewarding experiences for any child is starting his or her elementary education. Kindergarten is a truly exciting and educational experience for children all over the country. Research shows that approximately 3.5 million American children are enrolled in kindergarten each year, typically starting at age 5 after preschool.

Many parents start teaching their young ones how to recognize numbers, shapes, and letters at home before their schooling starts. While this can help your child develop excellent academic skills, it is not the only way to prepare a child for kindergarten. Following these tips will help your child get ready to start school:

  • Encourage excitement about learning.
A student who enjoys learning is already primed for a great academic career. Exploring new things and places with your child will get him or her excited to learn more about the world and its many wonders.
  • Socialize.
Children have to learn to work well with their peers and build strong relationships. Introducing your children to new friends before enrolling them in school will allow them to experience peer interaction.
  • Let them be independent.
Many children are nervous or anxious about leaving their families for the school day. Teaching your child how to start doing regular activities on their own will help them learn to be more independent and more comfortable in school. Let your children slowly start taking care of their own hygiene and eating.
  • Meet with the teachers.
Children are typically shy around new people. Introducing them to the teachers and showing them the school is a great way to prepare them.
