Happy Father’s Day
This Sunday, June 19 is Father’s Day, a time to celebrate dads everywhere! We can use this special holiday to tell our hard-working, fun-loving superhero dad how much he means to our family with homemade crafts and projects. Below you will find a few ideas that you and your preschooler or toddler can do together to make celebrating easy and fun!

Decorate Matching Neckties– Colorful neckties are a great way to teach patterns to young children. First, draw an upside triangle for the knot of the tie and then fill in the bottom portion of the tie (templates can also be found online.) Make two so that you have one for your child and on for dad. You can use stripes with a repeating pattern or choose dots with alternating colors to help develop their math skills. After decorating, punch holes on each side of the knot, near the top. String yarn through each of the holes and secure the ends so the tie can hang loosely around their necks. Viola! Twinsies for Father’s Day! If you have more than one child, make more. Take a picture and this will be a funny keepsake for years to come!

Make Homemade Barbecue Sauce– Preschool aged children LOVE to help in the kitchen! Why not celebrate dad with a delicious barbecue and some homemade sauce? You can measure out all of the ingredients and then your child pour them into a mixing bowl. You will need:

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes. Marinate chicken or beef with sauce for 7-10 minutes in the fridge. Store any unused sauce (that was not used for the marinade) in mason jar or plastic container once cooled. Dinner is served!

Sing a Song. Who doesn’t love a beautiful serenade, especially when it comes from your sweet child? (Ok, sometimes, sweet…just kidding.) Teach your child this simple song for Father’s Day. It should be sang to the tune of “Jingle Bells.” It’s called, Thank You, Dad. “Thank you, Dad, Thank you, Dad, Thanks for loving me. Hugs and kisses, hugs and kisses, Comes to you from me.”

Go on an Adventure-Take dad to the park, zoo, baseball game or somewhere where he can relax and unwind. The best thing about celebrating dad is just spending time together, so plan something extra special!

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Lightbridge Academy!
