Help Your Child Separate and Make Smooth Transitions

February 09, 2016

Children often arrive at Lightbridge Academy in different moods and with different experiences. Working parents may not have time in the morning to sit as a family with their little ones to enjoy breakfast together. Parents can get frustrated and impatient just trying to get the whole family in the car and off to school and work.

Sound familiar?

Drop-offs can be difficult for parents and children. Most children adjust quickly and although they may be upset when the parents drop them off, they quickly settle down and enjoy the activities. For those that don’t, you may need to redirect their attention to a positive activity.

Here are some ways to assist upset children in making the transition from home to school:

  • Let your child hold something special from home, a blanket, stuffed animal, small scarf with mom’s perfume, laminated picture of the family
  • Greet them in a special way such as a funny handshake.
  • Look out the window.
  • Read a book.
  • Hold and hug your baby.
  • Make your little one your special helper.
  • Get out a special toy.

These simple tips will help you to nurture them more effectively and provide a fun and exciting time while they are in your care.
